COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

"I get by with a little help from my Friends" or "It takes a village" There is something to be said about the word "community" and about being a part of a community. It takes action! I believe We're all good at something. So play to your strengths... Me? I like to build things.. repair things, even change things.. Material is not always a deciding factor sometimes its metal with an engine in it like a car or motorcycle but mostly I like wood.

RebelsCare - I am a rehab addict... I love to fix things, any time I can work with tools is my happy place. About 10 yrs ago, my Son, Max came to me with an enlightened idea... You see he's been with me on every one of those adventures... He wanted to do more in our own community. So with the help of a close friend Doris we formed A Teen Community Service Organization called RebelsCare We partnered with the town social workers, area churches, and friends to identify families in need of assistance with home repairs that they were unable to do. We solicited High School teens in need of Community Service hours and but projects together to address those needs. We recently partnered with American Red Cross, Lions Clubs and Boy Scouts and participated in the 1st New Fairfield's Senior Safety Day. Teens went into Homes and installed smoke and CO detectors and replaced battery's in those already in place. They reviewed exit plans with senior residents that they could utilize in case of an emergency. Teens communicating with seniors.. it was an enlightening Day. Everybody needs more of that! So it is our plan to make that an annual event. We also achieved our 2015 goal of evolving into a 501c-3 Non-profit organization. We are currently applying for grants to help fund some upcoming projects for 2018 & 2019. We hope to continue to grow and serve our communities needs. www.rebelscare.org

Homefront - For the past 12 yrs or so I've participated in the Homefront projects. They are held over two weekends in the spring. The first weekend is a prep weekend with @ 30 or so volunteers depending on the scope of the project. Ours is usually a large project which can include replacing a roof, installing gutter, Painting the complete outside and trim. An interior project can be plumbing and electrical repairs (skilled professionals tackle those tasks) while some paint and clean where needed. You can usually find me at the top of a ladder with Rich repairing soffit, painting peeks or installing gutters. Sounds like a lot of work but as the saying goes "many hands make light work" and we typically have about 100 people for 8 hrs on 2nd Sunday and that's a lot of man-hours. I had the privilege of being The House Captain one year when Mark was unable to be there and it was a truly memorable event. Directing all those people is like conduction an orchestra.. hands in the air directing the flow of work and the final result a masterpiece of Community Pride... You know where I'll be the 1st Sunday in May!

Group Workcamp - Around the same time in my life I started participating in a summer program for teens called Group Workcamp. There are sites throughout the summer in cities across the united states that coordinate home repairs for underprivileged neighborhoods. You travel to the site on Sunday and spend the week working on a home with 5 or more people. The types of repairs vary here from house painting inside or out And some construction. I tend to get construction type jobs so I'm digging holes poring concrete and building decks and ramps. We live in a public school, sleep on blow-up mattresses and eat cafeteria food... with 400 other people.. And always leave with a feeling of peace and joy at what we accomplished and how appreciative the residents that we help are. This has turned into an annual event in the Blum house!

"Our experience working with Debbie was wonderful. As first time home buyers we often felt overwhelmed and did not know where to start. Debbie used her professional experience and outgoing personality to streamline the entire process. There are so many aspects to consider when house shopping but Debbie educated us along the way and was always joyfully available to answer our questions. She genuinely cared about our wants and needs and considered them deeply when selecting locations to show us. We would recommend her to anybody who is looking for a new place to live.

"When I relocated to Danbury, Debbie help us buy our condo. This was the 4th place that my wife and I had bought since our marriage and it was our best purchase experience of the four. Debbie quickly learned our needs and tastes, and she nailed it on our first outing. Everything after that was a smooth as could be. Debbie took care of everything so that we could focus on the move. Debbie is a hard working talented professional with way above average listening skills. We unreservedly recommend her."
